Moodou's home village is Fara Banta, his family were subsistence farmers. His uncle was a taxi driver who occasionally brought visiting birders to the village. Modou was sometimes able to assist and accompany the visitors. Gradually he developed an interest in birds and realised it may be possible to make a living as a bird guide.
In 1996 Modou started training as a bird guide alongside Mass Cham who was one of the first professional bird guides in The Gambia.
In 2005 Modou set himself up as freelance professional bird guide and currently is the elected president of 'The Gambian Bird Guide Association'.
Soon a deep interest in birds and wildlife developed. Birding has now become more than just a way to earn a living, he is currently involved with several local conservation and charity projects and has many contacts throughout The Gambia.
